Pubs closed on St. Patrick's Day 1903 ☘

2020 isn't the first year that pubs were closed in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick’s Day wasn't an official Irish public holiday until 1903 when the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act 1903 was introduced. This man who introduced this act was Irish MP, James O’Mara ,and he was also responsible for the law that closed pubs on March 17.

Here are the Killaloe Notes for 23 March 1903 (Nenagh Guardian) - reporting on the closing of pubs on St. Patrick's day 1903, fishing and even the weather, which was just as wet as recently.
